The NSW Chapter hosted its Breakfast Seminar at Randwick Racecourse on Tuesday 27th March 2012. Members were able to appreciate the beauty of Randwick at dawn with horses still undergoing their training. With some 65 members and guests in attendance the seminar on 'Mounted Security' was an excellent opportunity for those present to see this unique force (the only mounted security team in the southern hemisphere) in "action". After a brief presentation by Dennis Mitchell, Security & Risk Manager, for Randwick, the Team gave us a live demonstration of the horses in action. A small number of members 'volunteered' to play the part of the crowd and the security team demonstrated how offenders can be controlled.

We'd like to thank Shane Brady, General Manager, Security & Risk, Australian Turf Club for his and his team's time this morning. This was a fantastic event and members and guests present had a wonderful time.

The NSW Chapter of ASIS International hosted its last seminar for 2011, with a Panel Discussion on "Diversity in the Security Profession".

The panellists included: Jenny Muldoon, (Sydney Opera House), Widad Ayoub (Commonwealth Bank) and Lyndall Milenkovic (Risk Works P/L) and moderated by Allen Barry, CPP (Deputy Chairman of the NSW Chapter). This was an informative and throught provoking discussion which raised many questions around how our profession can be more inclusive and attract more people of diverse backgrounds. Interest was also expressed in how the Chapter can assist in this endeavour.

The final seminar was a panel discussion on "Young Security Professionals: The Next Generation".

Our Panelists included:

Daniel Rasins, Lead Security Consultant, SKM,
Steve Van Zweiten Jr, Account Manager, Exact Security,

Pictorial Highlights from the Conference.

Some 120 people attended to hear speakers present the conference theme: 'The Human Factor in Security Management.' The Conference sought to answer the complex questions of why good people turn bad; what drives a criminal, a terrorist, a corrupt person. Exploring the psychological aspects of terrorism, torture, crime and workplace violence our speakers presented a unique and insightful experience to those in attendance.
The opening speaker was Nick Kaldas, NSW Deputy Commissioner of Police, who provided an overview of the current status of terrorism world-wide; how terrorism and terrorists are adopting to changing circumstances and how Australian law enforcement is tackling the challenge of local home-grown terrorist threats. Our second speaker was Dr Alex Kristovics of the University of Western Sydney; Alex discussed how good people turn can become torturers. Providing an overview of major university studies in which participants were asked to "administer" electric shocks to people, the studies disturbingly revealed that many people will "follow orders". Alex also provided a discussion of the recent experience with the United States in the Abu Ghraib scandal.
After a short tea break the Conference reconvened to listen to Dr Michael Kennedy also from the University of Western Sydney. Michael presented the societal influences driving corrupt behaviour and the perceptions of wrong-doing in our media-saturated culture. Michael's distinct presentation style was warmly received by the attendees! Our last speakers were Dr Troy McEwan of Monash University and Dr Lisa Warren. Troy and Lisa reprised their presentation from the ASIS International Asia-Pacific Conference in February 2010; presenting a very interesting presentation on stalking, fixation and the impact of those affected with psychological issues in the workplace.
All attendees and speakers were then treated to a three course luncheon with select Australian wines. During the luncheon, Rod Cowan, well known Australian journalist and commentator on security, presented his now traditional humerous "headlines" from the Conference. From the rather sombre subject-matter Rod was able to present a few laughs.
The Conference was a spectacular success and warmly received by all attendees and speakers. The NSW Chapter Chair, Nick Stramilos, CPP would like to thank the hard work of its Event Coordinator Lyndall Milenkovic, Secretary Sean Trewin, PSP, Deputy Chair Allen Barry, CPP, Assistant Regional VP for NSW, Martin Moseley, PSP, CPP, and Treasurer Paul Storey, PSP, CPP in making the Conference a memorable and worthwhile event. Nick would also like to thank the Conferece Sponsors and Supporters: Platinum Sponsor, ACG Fire and Security; Gold Sponsors, SNP Security and Mega Fortris Australia; a note of thanks also to ID Warehouse, FSH Fire and Security Hardware, Wilson Security and Paragon Risk Management. A thanks also to the Westpac Group for their ongoing and generous support of the NSW Chapter.

ASIS Queensland Chapter Round-Up for the Year to Date

2010 has started well for ASIS Queensland Chapter with steadily growing membership and a range of education and professional advancement events planned during 2010.
On February 10, Chapter members and other security professionals attended a presentation at the Queensland Fire & Rescue Service, Special Operations Group in Cannon Hill, on responses and planning factors for facility, security & risk managers, for incidents including chemical and potential biological exposures. ASIS Qld Chapter member, Station Officer John Dodd ran an information session followed by a tour of QFRS response and capability outline by other QFRS Special Operations staff.
John and the QFRS Special Operations Team gave a rare insight into practical but procedural steps in the mitigation and appropriate response to 'white powder' incidents and incident management recommendations to increase efficiency and minimise facility downtime and consequential reputation exposure. ASIS Qld Chapter sends its thanks to John and the QFRS Special Operations Cannon Hill team for an insightful and practical look at this security and health based risk.

On March 3rd, Qld Chapter Chair Gordon Willcocks CPP, gave a special presentation at the Security Institute, Wooloongabba regarding the inaugural Certified Protection Professional (CPP) examinations to be held in Queensland by the Chapter in Brisbane later in the year. With the support of Australian ASIS Chapters and approval with ASIS International Certification representatives during the recent ASIS Asia-Pacific Conference in Sydney the 'pen and paper' exam will be conducted in Queensland for the first time. The exam will be preceeded by a series of Chapter arranged study sessions, information resources and support for members wishing to undertake this prestigious and internationally accredited qualification. Senior security professionals and fellow Qld Chapter member, Lili-Ann Mitchell, CPP, Principal Advisor, Asia-Pacific for Rio Tinto Global and Gavriel Schneider, CPP, Director Dynamic Alternatives, gave the forum a personal insight as to the international recognition and credibility associated to the CPP certification as well as the pre-qualification, study and commitment for applicants to attain. Applications must be received by ASIS International for the November exam by 1st September and potential Qld Chapter applicants are strongly recommended to contact Gordon Willcocks CPP, by July for vetting and information arrangements. Only the CPP will be offered in 2010 by the Qld Chapter but other ASIS certifications may be offered in subsequent years. ASIS Qld wishes to thank Geoff Schurer, Principal, Security Institute for the facilities and ongoing support.
April 7th saw the Chapter at Jupiters Hotel and Casino, Gold Cost, for a membership drive coordinated by Chapter Deputy Chair and Jupiters Safety and Security Manager, Bill Harding. Bill and fellow ASIS colleagues from Treasury Hotel and Casino gave an information session on the security business approach in gaming and hospitality, accompanied by an ASIS member benefits address by Gordon Willcocks CPP.
